Alfama Metro Station Concept
Edinburgh Napier University
During my studies at Napier University, I had the pleasure of conceiving the Alfama Metro Station project as part of the Design for Public Spaces module. The brief was to conceptualise and propose multiple public spaces within the metro station in Lisbon for commuters to enjoy.
Guided by my passion for crafting enticing and inclusive public spaces, my approach to the project was focused on creating environments that welcomed all and reflected the rich Portuguese culture ingrained within Lisbon's streets. With this in mind, I selected Alfama, celebrated for its vibrant street art, as the location for my metro station.
My vision included four interconnected public spaces: a lively public square, two captivating galleries, and a metro station. At the heart of it all, I envisioned a spectacular vehicle - a vertical cable car with a glass viewing platform. This extraordinary feature would transport commuters on a mesmerizing descent deep underground, offering a fresh perspective and an immersive experience like no other.
Imagine stepping into the cable car, embarking on a journey through grooved cave-like chambers adorned with meticulously hand-painted murals, resembling primitive cave art. This evocative voyage allowed visitors to reconnect with the raw essence of our roots and the genuine creativity expressed through human paintings.
To bring my vision to life, I seamlessly integrated Alfama's natural beauty, Portuguese culture, and unique artistry into every facet of my design. From the welcoming public square to the alluring galleries and the station itself, the spaces harmoniously reflected the spirit of Alfama, inviting commuters to gather, unwind, and immerse themselves in the city's vibrant cultural fabric.
